Why start solids?

The National Health and Medical research council (NHMRC) guidelines recommend commencing solids AROUND 6 months, plus or minus a month. (NHMRC infant feeding guidelines, updated review is due to be published late 2011.)

At this stage:

  • A baby’s iron and zinc levels are starting to drop.
  • Protein and energy level requirements have increased.
  • Babies are developmentally ready to start at around 6 months with improving oral motor skills.
  • Fine and gross motor skills develop to enable self feeding.
  • They are more socially aware and enjoy the social interaction related to feeding.
  • Digestive enzymes have developed.
  • The immune system has developed.
